Not another toothache!

Dry mouth, bleeding gum or sensitive teeth are some things that many have experienced at some point in time. In most cases, these can be fixed by simple home remedies, however in many instances, these require urgent medical attention as they are signs of a more serious problem. We all take extra care of our skin or outward appearance, but caring for our teeth is also of utmost importance. Our teeth is a cause of a lot of our internal problems and it can tell others a lot about us.

A very popular trend today is oral piercing however if not administered properly, it can lead to serious side effects such as mouth sores, gum infection, fractured teeth or loss of tooth altogether. If not cared for effectively, this can be a very painful experience creating adverse side effects that are not easily forgotten. Whatever the reason for our teeth problems, we need to look at all our symptoms closely as recent studies have now linked dental ailments to respiratory disease, clogged arteries, heart disease and facial cellulitis just to name a few. As shown below, with a little extra care, many dental ailments can be prevented. Should you experience any of the dental ailments noted below, you can follow a few hygienic steps as these are known to not only fix the situation but prevent them altogether.

Dry Mouth- This is caused by a reduction of saliva flow and can be a symptom of a medical condition. In mild cases you can chew sugar free gum or candy as this can assist in the increase in saliva flow. Signs of dry mouth are problems speaking and swallowing. Sore throat and hoarseness, dry nasal passages or a burning sensation in the mouth.

Tooth sensitivity: This can be caused by a fractured teeth, gum disease or a worn enamel. For ease, use a toothpaste designed specifically for sensitive teeth.

Cavities: These are holes in your teeth caused by tooth decay. For prevention, brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

Tooth Erosion: This is a wearing away of the tooth enamel by acid. Rinse your mouth with water after eating acidic food and drink or swallow acidic liquid quickly to allow remineralisation to occur. A straw to drink acidic liquid is a good option. Finally, replace carbonated drinks with water, tea, unsweetened coffee or milk.

Trench mouth: This is a painful and severe gum infection. It can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene with regular dental checkups.

Abscessed tooth: This is an infection developed from a broken tooth or tooth decay and can spread thoughout the mouth and body. Should you suspect this to be your case, seek immediate medical attention. A root canal is usually the only option for such a problem.

Oral Thrush: Should this be suspected, seek immediate medical attention. This can only be controlled by antifungal medications taken through the mouth over 5 to 10 days.

Bad breath: This is caused by a series of problems such as cigarette smoking and medical conditions, however with frequent brushing and flossing, this can be remedied.

Bleeding Gum: This is usually a tell tale sign of gum disease or other serious medical problems. Its cause are numerous however with regular dental check ups, this can be prevented or effectively treated.

There are many other teeth problems not discussed, however as advised most can be prevented by a good dental routine. These tips should only be used as a guide thus should any symptom persist, seek immediate medical advice.
